Friday Bright Night’s Sailing / RYA Onboard is back!

Our hugely popular Juniors event, is hopefully going full steam ahead in 2022!

Due to the restrictions and guidelines we’ve been unable to offer our Friday evening sessions through the summer for the last few years, hopefully things are starting to return to some sort of normality, and we’re going to run the RYA OnBoard / Bright Nights Sailing scheme again at DSC.

A great opportunity for fun and games for our young people and parents, in the fresh air, out on a sailboat with their friends, and having fun, in a safe and controlled environment. Sailing and watersports are brilliant for everyone’s physical and mental well-being.

The Friday evening RYA OnBoard scheme at DSC is usually split into 3 sessions, 6.30pm, 7.30pm, and 8.30pm (when the evenings are long enough). We ask people to arrive early & ready to go afloat, to facilitate booking in for their session, safety briefings, and getting out on the water. Once the individual session is finished on the water, get a warm shower in our dedicated child friendly facilities and changed into dry clothes, before enjoying a burger or hotdog fresh from the BBQ in our open air club courtyard.

Mums and Dads are welcome to stay and enjoy our infamous DSC hospitality in the bar, enjoy a drink or a coffee, admire the view and watch the fun and frolics out on the water from the lounge or balcony room, at least one parent must remain on site whilst their child / children are on the water.

Children having fun on a dinghy during youth course

Our BNS / RYA OnBoard scheme is suitable for all abilities, and all children and young people from 8 until they reach 18 years old. From novice to competent sailor, watch your child gain confidence and valuable life skills – our beginners from a few years ago are now our Helm’s, RYA instructors, and future leaders.

We embrace our youth at DSC encourage and empower them to progress through the medium of Sport, train to become instructors, sail & race, dream of becoming world champion athlete’s, but most of all have fun in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of RYA instructors and Adults with the relevant experience and qualifications.

The 2022 registration evening is on Friday 13th May at 7.30pm – please come along to our wonderful clubhouse on the seafront in picturesque Donaghadee, and sign up to register your child, if the weather is nice we’ll fire up the BBQ! Forms are available from the link below – please speed up the process by filling them in and bringing with you on the night!

The Helm’s refresher and selection for those already with an RYA level 4 on the 27th June.

The water based sessions start on Friday 3rd June, book one of our 3 sessions online on our website to come sailing every Friday evening through until the end of August weather permitting. The sessions are open online for booking every week from Tuesday evening, through until Friday afternoon

The RYA OnBoard sailing is free for all Donaghadee Sailing Club member’s and their families. There’s special introductory rates available for young people to join as Junior members if they wish to participate in this programme.

Why should the children have all the fun? Parent’s are welcome to sign up for one of our introductory sailing session or SUP (stand up paddle board) sessions while the kids are on the water, we can accommodate adult’s on Keel Boats, Small Yachts, and sup’s on certain dates as we have additional resources in place – more details soon!

DSC needs adult’s to volunteer to help run this event, and make it a success, so please consider joining our team of Volunteers!
