A little bit about Donaghadee..
Donaghadee Sailing Club is located in the seaside town of Donaghadee, Co. Down on the east coast of Northern Ireland. Donaghadee has a long history with many of it’s prominent features dating back as far as Norman times, including the harbour which dates back to the 17th century. The modern harbour was constructed in 1821 and has been a haven for local fishermen, sailors and visitors alike. The harbour also acted as a ferrying point between Northern Ireland and the Scottish village of Portpatrick on the Galloway coast, as well as being the starting point for those curious enough to swim the North Channel. The town boasts many excellent restaurants including Pier 36, Harbour & Co, Bull & Claw and Grace Neills.
Club History
The Club was formed in 1970 to provide facilities for the local sailing community. In 2005, the club commenced redevelopment plans to modernise, extend and serve the needs of our growing member base. We were successful in receiving substantial funding from Sport NI, other bodies, local businesses, members of the local community and of course our own club members. Construction of the new DSC clubhouse began in October 2008; it was completed in April 2009 and opened by double Olympic Sailor Shirley Robertson. Today we are a vibrant community with members of all ages. We are a passionate bunch and the club is run by our members, for our members.
Club Pennant
In 2021, our club logo was modernised from what you see here. We have retained the historical seahorses and the floating fire basket that used to be lit just outside the harbour to warn old mariners of a rock, ‘Wee Scotsman Rock’, which remains there to this day.
Clubhouse and Facilities
There are extensive sea views from inside and there is a delightful external balcony from where members can watch the sailing in the bay from the comfort of the club. The clubhouse also has an enclosed external courtyard where members can relax and enjoy the summer sun and the Friday Night BBQ.
