Welcome to Donaghadee Sailing Club’s fun filled Topper Sprints event, back for 2022!

It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to run this event for the topper class, but we’re back, albeit in a slightly shorter format – as a full on, one day only event! So come along to Donaghadee, race in the challenge event, and get to experience some of our weird, wonderful and infamous tidal streams!

The emphasis  of the Topper sprint’s challenge @ DSC is on a fun learning experience, it’s rather different to that of a normal Traveller race day or weekend. It’s all about getting practise at starts, mark rounding, finishes, making new friends & having fun, so whether your a seasoned racer or just starting out on your topper journey this event is for you!

It’s a quickfire series of back to back races, with a start signal and flag approximately every 3 minutes for a new race for a pair of the flights. The individual races are planned to take between 10-15min to complete before you line up for the next race again.

The plan is for every participant have around 10 short races over the day with boats racing in flights (mini fleets) of 6 topper sailors, all identified by a coloured ribbon on the mast head. This will mean red flight vs green flight, blue vs brown etc. On Saturday afternoon the results will be compiled and no one will have any idea how they have faired, the winners of each flight competing in the finals, should be a good days fun!

It is a great opportunity to try something new.

Entries will be restricted to 36 boats, and is open to both full rig Topper and 4.2 sailors.

Numbers are not normally capped but on this occasion, to make sure everyone gets plenty of sailing it is necessary. The race officer wants minimal waiting around on the water.

In order for our Volunteers to make necessary plans, prepare and organise the day for a successful day bookings will close 10 days prior to the event.

Closing date for Entries has been extended and will now be on Sunday 15th May at 11.59pm!

The event requires a minimum of 30 participants to make it work and give every participant the correct number of races.

The  DSC clubhouse will be open and parents etc welcome to enjoy the racing from our members lounge, balcony room, or hopefully in the sunshine in our sheltered courtyard whilst enjoying some of our legendary hospitality, with teas/ coffees / snacks & drinks from the bar. We will have breakfast baps on race morning for competitors and their parents, but don’t plan on offering a post event BBQ this year.

Please fill in the linked Medical Consent form and bring with you, to hand in at the event registration. The registration will be open 7.30-9.30pm on Friday evening 20th March in the Balcony room, upstairs in the clubhouse and from 9.00am on the Saturday morning in the training room, access via the gate at the front of the clubhouse. It’ll be possible to unload your topper and equipment and leave overnight in our dinghy park if required.

Medical Consent form is available for download here: Medical-Form

Notice of Race is available here: Topper-IRL-Notice-of-Race

Sailing Instructions will be available the week before the event.

Hope to see you all there, it’s shaping up to be a great day.
