DSC Regatta - 31st July
Posted on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 by Fiona Pritchard

Regatta Day dawned a bit grey & misty but it improved as the day went on apart from a few very heavy downpours.  With marks in place, battery crew in attendance and safety boats at the ready, racing got underway at 11am, with a good turnout of dinghies for the 3 morning races.

After a quick break for lunch the afternoon saw the arrival of the cruisers and notably two Waverleys from BYC, ready for the afternoon races. Once again we had a good turnout of dinghies for the pm racing, we had reasonable winds apart from a few strong gusts which accompanied the heavy rain.  Racing was wound up at 4pm.  Members and guests then assembled in the courtyard for the customary tea and buns as well as a few alcoholic beverages for some, prior to the prize-giving (with no prizes, but that's another story! - bottles of wine appeared to be a satisfactory substitute!).

Full results and photos will follow.

An evening event was then held in the clubhouse with live music by 'Lazy Days' - a good night was had by all in attendance.

At Sunday lunchtime, despite a few sore heads, as per tradition, club members made their way in various craft, large and small to the Copeland Islands for a picnic/BBQ.  A good day ensued and for once the weather was kind to us, NO RAIN!!

Our event however was tinged with sadness when we learned of the death of Duncan McInnes, a founder member of our neighbouring club CIBC, who was found drowned on Sunday morning at Groomsport Harbour, along with his beloved dog.  Duncan who was 84 years old had taken part in DSC Regatta on Saturday afternoon in his yacht 'Talisman', accompanied by his dog as always.  DSC extend their condolences to Duncan's family and all at CIBC.

Congratulations Oisin & Conrad
Posted on Monday, July 5, 2010 by Fiona Pritchard

Congratulations from all at DSC go to two of our young sailors.  Firstly to Oisin McClelland who won the Laser Junior National Championship held at Wexford on 3rd & 4th July. Oisin finished a very credible 5th overall in the standard Laser fleet, being the first youth sailor awarded him the Junior National Championship.  Well done Oisin on an excellent result!

A number of our young sailors were also competing that week-end at the Irish Topper Championships held at Carlingford Lough Yacht Club - congratulations to Conrad Parkinson who took 2nd place in the Topper 4.2 Class - Conrad had 2 wins and 3 second places in the 5 races sailed - well done Conrad.

Posted on Monday, June 28, 2010 by Fiona Pritchard

Members and guests enjoyed an excellent week-end of sailing and entertainment at the GP14 Ulster Championships held at DSC on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June.  The weather was kind to us with excellent sailing conditions on both days of the event - a total of 24 boats took part with participants from all parts of Ireland.  Two races were sailed back to back on Saturday with challenging  courses being set by the Race Officer, Jimmy McKee.  An excellent meal was prepared and served by the ladies of the club after racing with musical entertainment in the evening by 'Katrina', a late night for some and some sore heads on Sunday morning!

Racing got underway again with a bright and breezy start on Sunday morning - conditions were slightly more challenging on Sunday with a few capsizes for the crews.  Two races were completed on Sunday and all were safely ashore by 3pm.  Prizegiving was held at 4pm - congratulations go to Paul Maguire and Stuart Boyle from Sutton Dinghy Club who were the Ulster champions.  Full details of prizewinners below:-
